What is Stress?

Stress is defined as a feeling of emotional or physical tension. Emotional stress usually occurs when situations are considered difficult or unmanageable. Therefore, different people consider different situations as stressful.

Physical stress refers to a physical reaction of the body to various triggers. The pain experienced after surgery is an example of physical stress. Physical stress often leads to emotional stress, and emotional stress is frequently experienced as physical discomfort (e.g., stomach cramps).

Stress management refers to various efforts to control and reduce the tension that occurs in stressful situations.

Reducing stress is first and foremost an inside job. In truth,the best stress relief comes from making a radical change of mind to realize that you have the power within you to love your life, to choose inner peace, and to view your world differently. In so doing you can effect changes in your outer experiences. Remind yourself often that you have the power of personal peace within you and that you are willing to exercise it now! Then you are no longer at themercy of whomever or whatever you identify as your triggers for stress.

When you remember that you have the power within you to make new choices and change your perspective, you are in control of the only thing in life you'll ever truly control: your own choices for responses. You can remind yourself that emotions (such as that annoyance, frustration or overwhelm!) are simply providing you with feedback about your world. You can evaluate that feedback, makepractical decisions to change the situation, and choose to handle it all from a place of inner calm.
